Due to changes made in labor laws by government, approximately 15 crore workers from 10 central trade unions are on a one day national strike on Wednesday. The protests made by the workers has drastically effected the important services all over the nation. The strikes began after having talks with the Labor Ministry that failed to agree over the calculation of minimum wages. The other demands of the union leaders include withdrawal of anti-worker amendments in labor laws and stopping the disinvestment and privatization of PSUs.
The combined membership of 15 crore workers in public and private sector enterprises including banks and insurance companies comprise these 10 unions. Even though union leaders claimed that the strike will affect the operation of important services like transport and supply of power, gas and oil,the Bharatiya Janata Party-backed Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) claimed that power, oil and gas supplies would not be affected because a large number of public sector workers in these fields would not take part in the industrial action.
