On Wednesday, Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu reminded the Center of its promise on special category status for his state, a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to inaugurate the new capital Amaravati. Chandrababu Naidu said “I am asking the Union government and Prime Minister to fulfill the promise under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act. I am asking the PM for a package and special category status…We are a 16-month-old state with many problems.”
The promise of special category status which grants states benefits from the Center was made by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the bifurcation of the state in 2014.The general secretaries of the two Communist parties, Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M) and S Sudhakar Reddy (CPI) too have jointly written to Modi urging him to announce special status for Andhra.
