20-year-old college girl drowned at Bandra Bandstand on Saturday. She is believed to have been swept away in the high tide. On seeing the incident, a youth who was standing nearby too jumped into the sea. When the incident occurred the girl along with her two friends (all girls aged around 19 and 20) have gone to take a stroll. The Bandra police and the fire brigade have reached the spot and are carrying out the rescue operation.

“After seeing the girl, a youth standing close to the Bandstand jumped into the water to rescue her. But he too was caught in the tide. People present at the spot immediately called the police.”

Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni said the college going girls have gone to Bandra Bandstand for a picnic. “One girl named Tarannum suddenly slipped from the rock. One youngster Ramesh Walunj tried to save her, but unfortunately both of them fell into the sea. Our sagari boats with the help of fire brigade are conducting the rescue operation. As this is high tide time we are facing problems in rescue operations. We are hoping that both of them are safe,” said Kulkarni.
