Deepika Padukone to play Amrita Pritam in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next?

Even before the release of Padmavati, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next on the love story between Amrita Pritam and Sahir Ludhianvi has grabbed eyeballs. Earlier, Priyanka Chopra was considered to play the lead, but now Bhansali’s muse Deepika Padukone will play Amrita in the biopic. After her hat-trick with SLB, Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, Bajirao Mastani and Padmavati, Deepika has signed her fourth film the director.

Deepika Padukone, who is gearing up for release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati, has been reportedly roped in to play poet Amrita Pritam in the director’s next venture and Abhishek Bachchan will star opposite her as Sahir Ludhianvi.

Touted to be the love story of Pritam and lyricist-poet Ludhianvi, the film will be Deepika’s fourth venture with Bhansali. Abhishek is likely to essay Sahir’s role in the movie.

A Quint report quoted a source as saying, “Abhishek has begun preparing for his Sahir biopic . He will begin rigorous interaction with Sanjay Bhansali after Padmavati releases. But his groundwork on Sahir has begun in right earnest. He is regularly listening to the immortal repertoire of Sahir’s lyrics from Guru Dutt’s Pyasa to Yash Chopra’s Trishul. Abhishek’s father, Amitabh Bachchan, had the good fortune to interact with Sahir when he worked in Kabhi Kabhie and Trishul. So Bachchan Saab is able to provide plenty of invaluable inputs to Abhishek’s preparation.

It is for the first time that Deepika and Abhishek will share screen space. The film is set to go on the floors sometime next year.

Padmavati is an upcoming 2017 Indian epic period drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, based on the epic poem Padmavat (1540) by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. The film features Deepika Padukone in the title role as Rani Padmavati, alongside Shahid Kapoor as Rawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji, with Aditi Rao Hydari and Jim Sarbh in supporting roles.
