Actress Disha Patani, best known for playing one of the lead heroines in Sushant Singh Rajput’s hit biopic drama MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, has reportedly been signed to play the titular role in Tamil director Sundar C’s fantasy epic ‘Sangamithra’.
If it is true, Disha will replace actor Shruti Haasan, who was the filmmakers’ first choice to play the coveted role. However, after promoting the film at Cannes earlier this year, Shruti walked out of the project citing differences with the filmmaker. “It’s just that the way I work is I would like to have a firm and clear idea of a script and the character. If that doesn’t happen, I just move on to the next project. But I wish the team all the very best,” she had told Indianexpress.com when asked why she had opted out of the film.
An IANS report quoted a source from the film’s unit as saying, “Disha has been signed for the project. The makers will very soon make an official announcement. It’s going to be a role of a lifetime for her,” adding that “It will be simultaneously made in Telugu. In Hindi, however, it will be made with an entirely different cast and the process will take time.”
After Shruti’s exit, some of the big names in the South Indian industry including,Nayanthara and Hansika Motwani were reportedly considered for the role of Sangamithra. According to latest reports, the filmmakers finalised Disha a few weeks ago and an official announced on the same is also expected to be made soon.
The film was announced at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival this year and the first look poster of the film was also unveiled there. The film is to be directed by Sundar C and produced by Sri Thenandal Films. A R Rahman will be composing the music for Sanghamitra.
Actors Jayam Ravi and Arya will play the leading men in the film, which will be made on a budget of Rs 250 crore. The film will be made in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.
