Today marks the 64th birthday of Malayalam Superstar Mammootty. He is otherwise known as the ‘Big M’ of Mollywood. His full name is Muhammed Kutty Panapparambil, born as the eldest son of Ismail Panapparambil and Fathima on September 7th, 1951 in a small village named Chempu in Kottayam district of Kerala. Even though he was from a conventional Muslim family, he was very passionate about movies and aspired to be a great actor wanting to wear colorful costumes and delivering intense dialogues.
He started his film career while he was in college as an LLB student. He was initially rejected by most of the film makers. Later he completed his graduation and started practicing as a lawyer at Manjeri court. His first appearance in movies was with Anubhavangal Paalichakal but he did not get any good recognition in that film. Mammootty received his first solid offer in 1979, immediately after he married Sulfath.
He made his debut with Devalokam in 1979 but got the major breakthrough in his career with the antagonist role in ‘Vilkkanundu Swapnangal’. Later, Malayalam movie industry witnessed the growth of Mammootty from a non-actor, to one of the most brilliant actors in the Indian cinema. He holds the record for winning the maximum number of Best Actor trophies at the National Film Awards, along with Kamal Hassan and Amitabh Bachchan. He was also awarded the fourth highest civilian award of the country, Padma Shree in 1998.
