A Shivamogga-based students’ organisation planning to organise a ‘Kiss of Love’ on Valentine’s Day cancelled the event on Sunday following opposition from women’s organisations and right-wing outfits. The students’ group said it had sought police permission to hold the event at Gopi Circle from 6pm to 11pm on February 14, which is observed as Valentine’s Day. The announcement about the event had evoked opposition from right-wing outfits, with the VHP even threatening to obstruct the programme. Right-wing organisations urged youngsters not to indulge in “unethical and non-traditional acts of exhibiting love in public”.
VHP district president H Ramesh Babu said the police could not hold them responsible if anything untoward happened during the event.
