Superstar Rajinikanth is the only Indian actor, who enjoys a substantial amount of fan following in Malaysia. Earlier, rumours were rife that the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, who’s on a two-day trip to Chennai, was likely to meet Rajinikanth at his residence.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on Friday shared that he was “happy” to meet Tamil superstar Rajinikanth at his residence in Chennai. PM Razak, who is here on a two-day visit, shared a picture on Twitter and tweeted, “Just had a very warm n friendly meeting with Mr Rajnikanth the Tamil superstar at his home. Who doesn’t know @superstarrajini ? Happy to meet the superstar in person today.”
Speaking at a media interaction today, Rajinikanth said, “I was there in Malaysia for two months, shooting for Kabali. I couldn’t meet him (Najib Razak) during my visit as he was busy. Now that he’s in Chennai, I called up him and he graciously accepted my offer. He also saw few clippings of Kabali.”
While reports suggested that Rajinikanth will replace the Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan as the brand ambassador of Malaysia Tourism, Thalaivar quashed all the rumours.
Rajinikanth said, “I was not offered to become brand ambassador for Malaysia. These are all rumours.”
According to news, the informal meeting between the movie star and the Malaysian premier went on for about an hour. The Telegraph had earlier reported that PM Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor enjoy Indian cinema and watch a lot of Hindi, Tamil and other Indian language films.
Rajinikanth also dismissed rumours about becoming the new face of Malaysian tourism and denied that he is making a foray into politics. Speaking to press outside of his house in Chennai, the actor said that he met Malaysian PM now because he was unable to do so during the shooting of his last movie, Kabali.
“I shot Kabali in Malaysia and couldn’t get to thank him and express my gratitude to them so he came and we had a cordial meet,” Rajinikanth said.
“I wasn’t offered to become brand ambassador. All these are rumours,” he added. Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan is currently the Indian brand ambassador for Malaysia.
Razak is on a two-day trip to Tamil Nadu ahead of the approaching general elections in Malaysia. His move is seen as an attempt to please the Tamil community in Malaysia through the visit.
Rajinikanth said, “The Malaysian PM is doing a lot of good for Tamils in Malaysia. I requested him to continue the same.” Rajinikanth said he had finished shooting for his upcoming film ‘Enthiran 2.0’ and that it could be a Diwali release.
