Vizianagaram: An auto-rickshaw driver allegedly tried to rape an 11-year-old girl in Kothavalasa in the district on Tuesday evening. The incident came to light when the victim’s parents lodged a police complaint on Wednesday.
According to police sources, the victim is a Class-V student of a private school in Kothavalasa and her house is 12 km away from the school. She had boarded an auto-rickshaw to return home. However, after all the passengers got off the vehicle, the driver drove to an isolated place and allegedly tried to rape the girl.
The victim resisted the rape attempt following which the accused hit her on the head with a brick before fleeing from the spot. A motorist passing by the area found the girl and alerted the police. Kothavalasa inspector G Sanjeeva Rao said the girl has been admitted to the King George Hospital in the city for a medical examination. A case has also been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) and a manhunt launched.
