South Indian superstar Mohanlal’s Pulimurugan has reportedly become the first Malayalam film to enter the Rs100-crore club.
Pulimurugan is made at a budget of Rs 25 crore, which is huge money for a Malayalam film. It has broken several records and created a few since its release on October 7. Pulimurugan is an out and out commercial entertainer, starring Mohanlal, Kamalini Mukherjee and Jagapathi Babu in the lead roles. The film that deals with man-animal conflict is directed by Vysakh.
Meanwhile, the film has earned more than Rs 60 crore at the Kerala box office alone. According to reports, the film had 600 plus shows on its opening day, which is more than Rajinikanth’s Kabali and Salman Khan’s Sultan, as they had 425 shows and 225 shows respectively in UAE and GCC regions. The filmmakers have also earned Rs 15 crore in sales of the film’s satellite and overseas rights.
Sharing his excitement, director Vysakh told Asianet News that the entire team was overjoyed at the news. To the question whether the audience can expect a sequel, he replied: “During the shooting of the film, we would often discuss in a light-hearted manner about the possibility of a sequel.
Liberty Basheer -president of the Film Exhibitors’ Federation- was quoted saying that they had anticipated such a massive response to the movie, based on their reading of the initial support the film had gathered from the masses.
“Yesterday was the fifth Sunday since the movie’s release. Despite this, the film is running to a houseful in many theatres across the state,” he said.
Mohanlal took to Facebook to share his happiness over the ‘big success’ of his movie.
Pulimurugan: is a 2016 Indian Malayalam-language action adventure film directed by Vysakh, starring Mohanlal in the titular role. Kamalini Mukherjee, Jagapati Babu, Bala and Lal appear in key supporting roles. It is the first independent screenplay written by Udayakrishna of the Udayakrishna-Siby K. Thomas duo. The film is produced by Tomichan Mulakupadam through the production house, Mulakupadam Films. The scoreand soundtrack are composed by Gopi Sunder, while cinematography is handled by Shaji Kumar.
The filming started in Hanoi, Vietnam in July 2015. The film was released on 7 October 2016.
