All India organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) has called for a nationwide strike on October 14 to protest against online pharmacy. According to reports, JS Shinde, President, AIOCD said, “We have decided to go for nationwide chemists strike on October 14 to protect health of general public as well as interest of our members.”The organisation is protesting against government’s move to regularize sale of medicines online referring it as illegal under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
Chemists from all over the nation including Faridabad, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala will be going on a strike on Wednesday. Shinde alleged that online pharmacies are selling goods like I-pill, MTP kits, anti-depression pills, codeine cough syrups illegally without even confirming the authenticity of the prescription. Shinde said even though online pharmacy business is going on illegally, the government is not taking any action against them.Recently, the Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) had acquired crores of rupees from online pharmacies by raiding 27 of them located in Mumbai, Thane and Pune.
