Nithya Menon Plays a role in Savitri Biopic

Director Nag Ashwin, who wooed critics and audiences with his Telugu directorial debut Yevade Subramanyam, is helming a biopic on the legendary southern actor Savitr

The Tamil-Telugu bilingual film will chronicle the life of Savitri, who was dominating the industry in the late 50s and 60s.  While the director is hunting for the suitable actor to play the role, the latest buzz is that actor Nithya Menon’s name has cropped up among the others. However, there isn’t any confirmation from the director.

Director Naga Ashwin, who wowed all with his debut film Yevade Subramanyam (2015), is planning this big project. Currently, script work is going on. Initially, Vidya Balan was considered for the role.

Now it turns out that Nithya is likely to play the role. Sources said the director had contacted her and narrated the story line. The film would be simultaneously produced in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam by Ashwini Dutt.

Titled Mahanati the sobriquet used to address the late actor, Ashwin spent the last six months in research – reading articles, books, meeting old journalists and actors.

Also, Mahanati will be a magnum opus period film set in the golden era. With massive setting, the film is likely to be anything one hasn’t explored in Indian cinema.

Actor Savitri was born on January 4, 1936. She made her acting debut in 1950 with Tamil-Telugu drama Samarasam. She went on to star in several classics such as Devadasu, Missamma, Pennin Perumai, Pasa Malar, Bhale Ramudu, Mayabazaar and Gundamma Katha. With Mahanati, the director feels to revisit time and bring back vivid memories of the legend on screen.
