Padmavati row: Want Deepika Padukone’s head… saved, says Kamal Haasan

As the controversies surrounding Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati refuse to die down, veteran actor Kamal Haasan on Monday came to Deepika Padukone’s rescue saying he wants her head saved and her freedom should not be denied.

He further said that many communities had earlier opposed his films too. “Many communities have apposed my films. Extremism in any debate is deplorable. Wake up cerebral India. Time to think. We’ve said enough. Listen Ma Bharat,” he added.

“I want Ms.Deepika’s head.. saved. Respect it more than her body.Even more her freedom. Do not deny her that. Many communities have apposed my films.Extremism in any debate is deplorable. Wake up cerebral India.Time to think. We’ve said enough. Listen Ma Bharat,” wrote Kamal on his Twitter page.

However, Bhansali isn’t bereft of support. Many stars from Bollywood, including Twinkle Khanna, Shabana Azmi, Vir Das, Nikhil Advani, Varun Dhawan and Sonam Kapoor have voicedstrong support for Bhansali and Padmavati.

Haasan’s tweet comes after the Harayana BJP chief media coordinator Suraj Pal Amu on Sunday said that he would reward Rs 10 crore to anyone who beheads Sanjay Leela Bhansali and actor Deepika Padukone. And Amu’s remarks came two days after a Meerut resident from the Kshatriya community declared a Rs 5 crore bounty on the heads of director and the female actor in Padmavati.

The reaction from the 63-year-old movie demi-god has come days after Haryana BJP chief media coordinator Suraj Pal Amu put a bounty of Rs 10 crore on the heads of Bhansali and Deepika. Suraj made his comments after a Meerut resident from the Kshatriya community announced a reward of Rs 5 crore for beheading these celebrities.

Interestingly, Kamal also recently courted a major political controversy after he spoke about Hindu ‘extremism’ in his weekly column for a Tamil magazine.

The Rajput Karni Sena, which is spearheading the protests across several cities, has said they would punish Deepika Padukone the way Lakhshman punished Ravana’s sister Surpanakha in the epic Ramayana – by chopping off her nose. Their shocking comment had also received an endorsement from Mr Amu. Ms Padukone’s security has already been scaled up.

Padmavati is an upcoming Indian epic period drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, based on the epic poem Padmavat (1540) by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. The film features Deepika Padukone in the title role asRani Padmavati, alongside Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Sultan Alauddin Khalji, with Aditi Rao Hydari and Jim Sarbh in supporting roles. Initially scheduled for release on 1 December 2017
