In an attempt to do their bit, sex workers from Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district shed out money from their savings and survived on just one meal a day to ensure they donate money for the ongoing relief work in flood crippled Chennai.
The sex workers in an event organised by NGO Snehalaya in Ahmednagar presented the cheque of Rs 1 lakh to District Collector Anil Kawade.
“These women were restless since the last four days, when they came to know of the deluge in Chennai. They decided they should do something to help residents there,” Snehalaya founder Girish Kulkarni told PTI.
It was important for them to contribute towards the relief work because they realized that a great calamity had befallen Tamil Nadu. Out of the three thousand sex workers in the district, two thousand of them contributed to the fund.
“We are in touch with Delhi-based NGO Goonj for ensuring further relief to the people of Chennai,” Kulkarni added.
