Shahid Kapoor Reacts to Swara Bhasker’s open Letter on Padmaavat

After numerous controversies, Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s magnum opus Padmaavat has finally hit the silver screen on January 25, 2018 and is doing wonders at the box office. Amidst controversies and threats, the audiences streamed into theatres across the country to watch the film. The magnum opus starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in the lead roles.

Swara Bhasker has once again hit the headlines for her comments and this time it is Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his film ‘Padmaavat’ at the receiving end. While the entire film industry has been lauding the film, Swara’s criticism has not gone down well with actor Shahid Kapoor who finds her comments odd.

While critics and viewers are all praises for the historic drama which is being lauded in the overseas market too, actress Swara Bhasker slammed director Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the ‘glorification’ of Sati and Jauhar in his recently-released epic period drama. The actress, in an open letter, said that the film reduces women to “talking about vaginas.” Shahid was asked his opinion on the same when he said, “I haven’t read it yet. We have been busy with other things, but I think this isn’t the right time. ‘Padmaavat’ is representing the film industry and it’s freedom of expression.”

“It has been a tough battle for us to be able to bring forth the film to the audience. It feels great to receive support from the entire industry but it feels odd that someone said something on a personal level. That’s OK though as everyone has the right to say what they want but I haven’t read it yet.”

Recently director Rohit Shetty too reacted to Swara’s open letter. Rohit, on the sidelines of the Mirchi Music Awards 2018, hit out at the Anaarkali of Aarah star and said, “I’d like to request everyone that after so much troubles and struggles the film Padmaavat has released, please let it run in peace.”

“It is our film, so if I say something or someone else says something, we would be trying to create more trouble for our film. Film has released and let the audience watch it. The film is doing phenomenal business after all the hassle and trouble the entire production has faced especially Sanjay Leela (Bhansali), Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and TV 18, let their movie run in peace,” the director added.

“We will start shooting for it in the next 10 days. We have already started table reads for the film. The story is based in Uttarakhand so I will be using a certain accent and dialect for the film. After playing a King, I will be seen as a small city lawyer. Apart from me, Shraddha Kapoor and Yami Gautam are part of the film,” he said.

Meanwhile, Shahid is all set to commence shooting for his upcoming project Batti Gul Meter Chalu. Throwing light on the film, he said, “Shree Narayan Singh in Toilet Ek Prem Katha talked about issues women faced with open defecation. Now he has chosen the electricity issue which will make the film very relatable to the common man.”

Padmaavat stars Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati while Ranveer Singh plays Sultan Alauddin Khilji. Aditi Rao Hydari, Jim Sarbh, Raza Murad and Anupriya Goenka feature in supporting roles.
