Actors Akshay Kumar andSonam Kapoor were accompanied by their family members to celebrate their moment of glory at the 64th National Film Awards ceremony here on Wednesday.
Akshay has been named the Best Actor for his performance in ‘Rustom’ – a choice criticised by a cross-section of people. But he was happy and proud of being a part of the ceremony with his “most important people” – his wife Twinkle and son Aarav.
Akshay Kumar shared a video where he said, “I will get my first National Award today. I can’t express my feelings.” He also spoke about how his parents support made him forge ahead despite academic failures.
Sonam Kapoor received a Special Mention from the jury for playing Neerja Bhanot in the film Neerja. While she was chirpy and exuberant on stage, her father and actor Anil Kapoor couldn’t gush any less. He stood up and kept clicking pictures of his daughter. Also seen with him was Sonam’s rumoured boyfriend Anand Ahuja, who also accompanied her to the ceremony.
Actor Anil Kapoor shared a pic on Instagram prior to the event. He captioned it as, “Dressed up & all set to accompany @sonamkapoor tonight for the #NationalAwards in Delhi! It’s a happy day!”
Veteran actor Manoj Joshi bagged the Best Supporting Actor awards for his performance in Marathi film Dashakriya. Kashmir-born actress Zaira Wasim – who has lauded for depicting a female sportsperson’s battle with the society with maturity in Dangal was also awarded by the jury under the Best Supporting Actor category. Zaira had essayed the role of young Geeta Phogat in Nitesh Tiwari’s directorial.
The six industries of the south — Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Tulu and Konkani — bagged a total of 18 awards, while movies from Assam, Bengal, Maharashtra and Manipur won in different categories.
