Train No. 16859 Chennai Egmore-Mangalore Central Express derailed near Poovanur railway station in Tiruchi Division around 2 a.m. on Friday. 38 passengers have been injured including 25 women. According to reports, 6 coaches along with the last coach got derailed and the passengers were taken to a near by government hospital in Vridhachalam. Railway sources reported that All trains heading to Chennai Egmore from southern Tamil Nadu were diverted via Thanjavur and Salem to Chennai and other destinations.
The derailment happened minutes after the train passed Poovanur railway station, some 8 kms north of Vridhachalam. Collector S Suresh Kumar and Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar immediately reached the spot and scrutinized the details and the area. Relief and rescue operations are being processed in full swing. Senior railway officials reached the spot to start the reconstruction and restoration process. The collector claimed that there were no casualties reported and the injured are being treated at the government hospital. All the passengers who have been injured are out of danger.
