The third instalment of XXX movie series,XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, which has been in development for years, is about to move forward with DJ Caruso as the director. The director of Disturbia would helm the film, starring Vin Diesel, reported Ace Showbiz.
In 2002, Vin Diesel starred as the extreme athlete-turned-spy Xander Cage in director Rob Cohen’s (The Fast and the Furious) xXx. Despite lukewarm reviews, the spy thriller became a verifiable box office hit by grossing over $277 million on a $70 million budget. With such success, the film received a sequel in 2005 in the form of xXx: State of the Union, but Diesel didn’t return and the lead was instead played by Ice Cube. However, with worse reviews and no success at the box office, the sequel seemed to effectively kill the franchise.
On the difference between the two franchises: “XXX is one of those films you do when you need to have a little fun. When the weight and pressures of all the other things have gone so far that you need to have a character that you can just have fun and more comment on life and comment on the outcome than being in it like Dom Torretto [from Fast and Furious]. Dom is very much the center of the storm, Xander is more the guide to something else and you’re just with him.”
